School-age children are invited to read aloud to a trained therapy dog on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings through December and January.
The dogs’ handlers sit nearby to help ease the interaction. Readers of any ability are welcome. Children who might otherwise be self-conscious relax a bit when they read aloud to a furry friend. They practice their reading, build self-esteem, and associate reading with a pleasant experience. Kids who are already strong readers can further enhance their skills and find new excitement when reading alongside a dog.
No registration is needed. Participants may drop in any time during the hour. More than one child may read at a time depending on the availability of dogs and handlers. Time slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Children are invited to bring a favorite book from home to read aloud to their companion or choose one off the shelf.
The program is free and open to anyone. Call 259-3300 or stop in the library for more information and a calendar of dates.
